In the rollercoaster of life, there are inevitable moments when things get tough. Whether you’re facing personal challenges, professional setbacks, or a combination of both, maintaining self-motivation becomes crucial for overcoming obstacles and pushing forward.
Pick yourself up…again!
Easy to say and often not that easy to do. There will be many situations where you are able to “pick yourself up”, dust yourself down and get going again – but what do we do when the motivation just escapes us? The time when we just don’t feel we have the energy to keep going.
What do you need to do to find self-motivation?
1. Prioritise
Think about what needs doing right now? Then work out what can wait until you have more energy.
2. Break down the tasks
Divide larger tasks into smaller more manageable steps – that way it won’t feel so overwhelming. Once you’ve done that, outline exactly what you need to do to achieve that task.
3. Create a structure and routine
It might feel boring but when you lack motivation, having a definite structure for your day or week or a routine to stick to can help you feel more motivated to get things done.
4. Get some support
Connect with supportive friends, colleagues or family members. Studies have shown that close relationships, where those people support you, can improve our mental and physical wellbeing. Surrounding yourself with people who are feeling positive at that moment will lift you up. Likewise, avoid the negative influences for a period of time.
5. Manage your expectations
Set realistic goals, otherwise you set yourself up to fail. If you’re not feeling motivated, keep tasks small and doable so that you see actual success and achievement.
6. Show yourself some self-compassion
Remind yourself that you’re just having a blip. It won’t last forever so therefore be kind to yourself. Accept that everyone has moments where they lack motivation, that’s just human nature.
Finally, celebrate progress not perfection.
Nobody is perfect – whatever they might tell you or you might see on social media. Celebrate the little wins, this can be the kickstart to re-motivating yourself. Once you learn how to do this, you have another tool to add to your tool kit and, as with most learned behaviour, it’s easier to do second time around.
